The Preservation and Revitalization of Inuit Sign Language project, funded by the Federal Government, Canadian Heritage, records the life stories of deaf Nunavummiut and their families. These 15 videos highlight customary Inuit ways of life such as relationships to the land, as well as the hardships of being disconnected from their families when they were sent down south to residential schools for the Deaf.
Videos also showcase the stories of deaf community members who were not sent down south to school and as a result, are unilingual users of Inuit Sign Language (ISL). These individuals are key sources of community transmission of ISL among both deaf and hearing community members. Widespread use of ISL among extended family members and friends enables for a high degree of deaf inclusion into regular social and cultural activities. This situation provides a positive role model that reflects the values of inclusivity embedded in Inuit Societal Values (IQ).
